Election Day Messianic Encounter In Israel
Last week, my wife and I had the privilege of voting for the first time in an Israeli election. But as historic as that moment was for us, the most interesting part of the day happened while we were waiting in line.
An elderly man sat next to me, and since he didn’t want to cut in front of anyone, he asked me in Hebrew, “Atah Acharon?” Are you the last in line? I pointed to the person who was last in line and said he was the Acharon.
Then, with a lighthearted play on words, I quoted Isaiah 44:6: “God says, I am the first, and I am the last (Acharon), and beside Me there is no other god.”
He smiled, but the interaction didn't end there. A young Israeli man nearby, with long hair and no outward signs of religious observance, said in Hebrew that this verse is in the Brit Chadash, or New Testament
I responded that there are significant theological differences between the Hebrew original and the Greek paraphrase.
Because of time constraints at the polling place, I handed him my contact information and invited him to continue our discussion another time. When he contacts me, I will also invite him for a Shabbat meal so he can experience the genuine warmth, beauty, and spirituality of Judaism.
This single encounter captures the heart of our mission at Jews for Judaism: to reach out to those who are estranged from their heritage, engage them with warmth and wisdom, and open our hearts and homes to them.
Today, you can help us reach more souls like him.
